Design Tip of the Month
How to Make Small Spaces Appear Larger
  • Hang curtains high, near where the walls meet the ceiling.
  • In rooms with low ceilings, use a wallcovering with vertical lines to create the illusion of height.
  • Install a floor-to-ceiling bookcase.
  • Remove moldings, chair rails and baseboards if your ceilings are low.
  • Introduce a florid, densely-colored rug.
  • Hang an oversize painting or large photo in a small space.
  • For window treatments, choose tailored solid curtains or crisp Roman shades.
  • Mirrored walls and screens give the illusion of space.
