What to Expect: Hiring an Interior Designer for Your Living Room

Posted on September 15th, 2017 by marketing.

HIRING A DESIGNER

Interior designers have a drive and passion to take any kind of room and creating breathtaking makeovers. More often than not, their work can be seen on different tv shows or photos online. But the time has come for you to make some changes around the house, starting with your living room.

What is an Interior Designer?

Think of it this way: an interior designer is an artist, and a room is their canvas. Their purpose is to envision and perfect the wants and needs of their customers. In order for those envisions to come alive, their design work must flow and be pleasing to the eye but also creative. To make that HGTV-magic happen.

Interior designers study color schemes, drawing, computer graphics, lighting, textile principles, presentation techniques, and more. No one wants to work with a designer who doesn’t know what they’re doing! Which is why most states require an interior design license before they start making your household dreams come to life.

When Will You Need a Designer?

Sure, you can pick and choose wall colors and lamps and tables and rugs. But not everyone considers themselves as a creative mind. Nor does everyone know the science behind how to make a room harmonious. And you don’t always need a designer to redo an entire room. If you’re having trouble with, say choosing the right color sofa, they can help with that too! An experienced, inspired professional can do just that. If you’re constantly awestruck by Pinterest images of home design, but never take action to create your own Pinterest-worthy living room, it may be time to hire an interior designer.

Reminder! What you imagine in your mind can differ from what the designer has in theirs. Remember to be open about the design process. Once everything comes together, you will probably end up loving it more.

Where to Start Looking

The automatic reaction to this question is to reach for your phone and search “interior designers near me” or something close to that. Who wouldn’t?

A smarter way of spotting the right designer for you does require some online digging, but this part can be fun. First off, do you have any images of past living rooms you’ve come across on Instagram or Facebook? Perhaps you made a trip to your local furniture store and fell in love with a display there. All these sources, have sources. Try this: type “living room design” on Pinterest search, choose the image you love most, and click through to the original website. Chances are the interior designer responsible for that gorgeous room will be named.

The only downside of this approach is the probability of that designer living in your city.

If risking the fact that your designer will be miles and miles away, there are other choices you can make. The most suitable way is to visit the American Society of Interior Designers (or just ASID) website. Here, you can “Find the interior design that best fits your design needs” in your area.

Be Prepared

If there is one thing designers know how to do, it’s to observe, listen, and learn. It is important to have answers ready for possible questions regarding the living room of your dreams. What’s the purpose of your wanting to redesign? What colors do you favor? Does it need to be kid-friendly? Pet-friendly? Are there furniture pieces you’d like to keep? And what does your budget look like?

Simply hiring an interior designer isn’t enough. They need direction and inspiration if you want your expectations met. It’s not likely that you both have the same taste. Leaving all the decisions up to them will probably result in a great living room, but you don’t want to end up disappointed because it does not reflect your style or personality. Don’t let their hard work, time, your time, or your money go out the window. You should know what you want beforehand. Maybe have some pictures ready of other living rooms you find appealing. Or use the Elite Interiors room planner to get you started! Communication is a two-way street that plays a huge role when it comes to redesigning your home’s second most popular room (next to the kitchen of course!).

Hiring an interior designer is an exciting way to plan a new, beautiful living room. Now that you know the basics, are you ready for a living room transformation?
